The three ways labeling fails

A rejected label is a rejected inspection.

Nobody schedules a re-inspection because the conduit was wrong. They schedule it because the marking was missing, illegible, or incomplete — and every one of those is avoidable at the labeling stage.

Handwritten markings

NEC 110.21(B) requires field-applied hazard markings to meet ANSI Z535.4 and be durable enough for the environment. A Sharpie on a blank sticker is the single most common rejection we hear about.

Sun-bleached labels

A thermal-transfer label on a rooftop disconnect in Central Florida can go unreadable in a single summer. Unreadable is the same as absent when the inspector walks up.

Wrong or missing data

An arc flash label without the working distance, or a panel directory that says “LIGHTS” for six circuits, fails 408.4(A) even though a label is physically present.

What that means in practice

The code does not just require that a label exists. It sets requirements for what it says, how legible it is, and how long it has to stay that way. We build to that third requirement as seriously as the first two.

Anatomy of a compliant label

Every field the inspector looks for.

An arc flash label is not a warning sticker — it is a data sheet. NFPA 70E 130.5(H) and NEC 110.16 between them call for specific, equipment-specific values. Leave one off and the label does not do its job.

  1. Nominal system voltageThe actual voltage of the equipment, not the service.
  2. Arc flash boundaryThe distance at which incident energy drops to 1.2 cal/cm².
  3. Incident energy & working distanceOr, alternatively, the arc flash PPE category — but never both on the same label.
  4. Shock hazard boundariesLimited and restricted approach distances for the voltage present.
  5. Equipment identification & study dateSo the label can be traced back to the analysis it came from.

The substrate is the compliance.

NEC 110.21(B) asks for markings “of sufficient durability to withstand the environment involved.” In Central Florida that environment is UV, afternoon thunderstorms, salt air, and rooftop temperatures — so material selection is not a cosmetic decision.
